Another stunning island, Amorgos posesses a charm that can cut like a knife when you’ll have to leave... The road from Aigiali to Chora, a splendid 15km by the coast climbing up until you climax in love-at-first-sight Chora, is one of the most scenic routes in the Cyclades, splendid at all times and weathers but at its best during sunset. On my first time there (1981?), the dirt road had just been opened and the only way to reach Chora was on foot, with our backpacks on. I still remember how beautiful and at the same time endless the trek was… As for the emblematic monastery of Panagia Chozovoiotissa, featuring in the film Le Grand Bleu, chances are you have never seen or will ever see such an extraordinary structure anywhere else, carved in the rocks, plunging in the Aegean and leaving you breathless from its’ beauty and the big blue…

The island is a paradise for trekkers of all ages. I long to go back and walk some of these paths...
